RECORD BREAKING: UNILAG GETS A NEW VICE CHANCELLOR - AND SHE'S A WOMAN!

Professor Folasade Ogunsola, a professor of microbiology in the College of Medicine, has become the first female vice chancellor of the University of Lagos.

On Friday night, Ogunsola was introduced as the thirteenth substantive VC of UNILAG.

Out of the seven people who were considered for the top position at the school, she was the clear favorite.

This development means that Ogunsola, who is expected to take over from the outgoing VC, Prof. Toyin Ogundipe, next month, would be the first female to occupy the position in the 60-year-old institution.

Ogunsola, the daughter of the late eminent geographer, Prof. Akin Mabogunje, has served the university in various capacities.

She was at a time the Provost of the College of Medicine in Idi Araba, Lagos and also served as a deputy vice chancellor to Ogundipe.

During the crisis that engulfed the institution about two years ago, when Ogundipe was removed from office by the then Governing Council led by Dr Wale Babalakin, SAN, she served as the acting VC for about three months before the Federal Government reinstated Ogundipe.

Other shortlisted candidates were: Professors Abayomi Akinyeye of the Department of History, Faculty of Arts; Mathew Ilori and Adeyinka Adekunle both of the Faculty of Sciences; Imran Smith of the Faculty of Law; Timothy Nubi of the Department of Estate Management at the Faculty of Environmental Sciences; and Ayo Olowe of the Faculty of Management Sciences.
