The Decision of Unilag as regards the Covid 19 Pandemic and Resumption

The University of Lagos, Akoka, popularly known as UNILAG closed its premises on the 21st of March, 2020 because of the Covid19 pandemic which began to spread more seriously at that time.

UNILAG has not had lectures or official academic activities since then which is almost three months ago.

What is the stand of UNILAG and what is the school saying?

Before we reveal the RELIABLE information to you, this was the school management's statement at the point of closure, almost three months ago:

Following the increase of identified cases of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in the country, the University of Lagos Management, at a meeting held with the Provost and Deans Committee on Thursday, March 19, 2020, resolved to close the University.

Subsequently, Senate at an emergency meeting held today, Friday, March 20, 2020 approved the resolution in accordance with the order issued by the Federal Government, Ministry of Education and the National Universities Commission that all schools nationwide should be closed for the period of ONE MONTH effective from Monday, March 23, 2020 as a proactive step aimed at preventing the spread of the virus.

In view of the above, Management hereby directs that latest by 4:00p.m. on Saturday, March 21, 2020,all students should vacate the hostels and return home. Resumption date is subject to review as developments unfold.

Members of the University community are enjoined to follow precautionary measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Management wishes everyone safety and good health during this period.

The Management of the University of Lagos held its last management meeting on Tuesday, April 28, 2020. It reviewed the directive of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, His Excellency, Muhammadu Buhari. This has to do with phased and gradual easing of lockdown measures in the FCT Abuja, Ogun and Lagos states which began on Monday, May 4, 2020.

The management has resolved that members of Staff should not resume yet to allow for adequate measures to put a phased resumption days/procedure in place. This means that any information you have been seeing about resumption is not true as it has not been announced yet!

This same information applies to other universities- they do not have the permission to resume yet.

Members of Staff of the University are to await the schedule of Resumption of Duty to be released soonest.Meanwhile, essential duties’staff like Works and Physical Planning Unit (Power), Security, Faculty and Hostel Porters should be at their duty posts.
